5 tips for preparing for an in-home newborn photo session ~ Gold Coast Newborn Photographer

Congratulations, mama! You’ve no doubt recently brought your little one home and you're looking to capture every precious moment. A newborn photo session is such an incredible way to bottle up this season as you're tiny newborn won't stay that way for long. It’s an exciting time, but I totally understand that it can also be overwhelming, especially if you’re a first-time mum. Don’t worry, though, I’ve got you! You don’t have to worry about making everything perfect. I will work with you to capture beautiful photos that you’ll cherish forever. In this blog post, I’ll share some tips on how to prepare for a newborn photo session at home, so you can relax, love on your bubba and enjoy the experience.

1 // Choose the Right Time

The best time to schedule a newborn photo session is within the first two weeks of your baby’s life. During this time, your baby is still sleepy and curled up, making it easier to capture those intimate and sleepy loved-up moments. I always suggest doing the shoot within the first 2-4 weeks of your little ones' life. You can book a date when you're pregnant and if we need to amend it, we can.

2 // Get Your Home Ready - it doesn't have to be perfect!

Before your session, we will chat and talk about your house and the rooms we will spend the most time in during the session. I often shoot in the lounge room, the master bedroom and bubs nursery if they have one... or wherever there is beautiful light! You don’t have to deep-clean your entire house or worry about every little detail. The focus will be on your baby and your connection, not everything in the background. I can work wonders in small spaces too so focus on a few areas of your home where we will likely spend the most time.

3 // Relax and Take Breaks

Having a newborn is exhausting, you are likely running on very broken sleep and the last thing I want you to feel is stressed during the photo session. I understand that you might need to take breaks to feed, change, or soothe your baby throughout the session. I love capturing these beautiful rhythms of your newborn days. I will incorporate these moments of feeding and settling into your photo session.

4 // Dress Your Baby Simply

When it comes to dressing your baby for the photo session, less is more. Dress them in a simple and easy-to-remove outfit before I arrive. Get yourself ready and then settle in and give bubba a big feed half an hour before I get there. I will then help to choose an outfit and dress and wrap them up.

5 // Embrace Imperfections

As a new mum, you might be worried about your postpartum body or your home not looking perfect. But the truth is, you are a wonder woman who just birthed a little one! These photos are a celebration of all that you are and this beautiful little soul that is now a part of your family. Don’t be afraid to embrace the messy, imperfect moments. You will look back and treasure the honesty and beauty of these photos so much one day.
